"Is It Possible to Discover a New Colour?"

Blue is a fascinating colour, known for its depth and limitlessness existing around us in the sky and ocean. blue is also believed, among some, to offer protection, especially against the "evil eye," it's often associated with the Virgin Mary, who is frequently wearing blue robes in her photos.

In 2013, the romantic film Blue is the Warmest Colour was released emphasising our collective subconscious feelings toward the colour.

French artist Yves Kleink this fascination further by exploring whether it was possible to "discover" a new color. His artwork International Klein Blue (IKB), completed in 1959, is a unique piece, consisting of a single, vibrant blue on canvas that challenges the viewer to rethink the power and meaning of colour. When I looked into the artwork I felt how much the artist was trying to engage with the colour in his work rather than using the colour to deliver a thought or express an idea. Klein experimented with different techniques, from rollers to sponges, creating varied surfaces. He even used naked models as “living brushes,” dragging them across the canvas to make imprints. His experimentalism extended further, creating rain “recordings” by driving with canvas tied to his car roof.

These processes have eventually led to the discovery of a new colour, inspiring even a rock band to name themselves after it.
